Usually, autumn (or, as we say in America, “fall”) doesn’t mean much to me. I’m in South Florida, where the trees don’t change color, the weather typically stays the same, and pumpkins don’t last long baking in the heat on the front porch. It’s also too hot to be drinking apple cider and pumpkin spice lattes, or visiting a pumpkin patch wearing scarves and boots.
Autumn, where I live, means “season” is here- the dreaded time when wealthy old snowbirds from up north come down to live in their winter homes. They clog up our roads and shout at customer service employees. They send their food back at restaurants, and take up all the early nail, hair, and waxing appointments. Some snowbirds are nice, but I haven’t had many good experiences dealing with them, and every year I wait for May, when they blissfully go back up north. I value kindness, and during “season,” I don’t see these snowbirds acting kind at all.
Autumn also means switching to jeans and long sleeves one day, and then going back to flip-flops and shorts the next day, because we got over-excited during that one evening when it was seventy degrees.
In sum, I love the idea of autumn, but I haven’t gotten many chances to experience the feel of autumn. Hopefully I can find answers to some of these questions.

What Signifies Autumn to You?
When I start seeing advertisements for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party/Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival on TV, and the changing color of the license plates on the highway.
What is the Best Way to Spend a Rainy Day?
I LOVE rainy days where I don’t have anything to do but stay home, light a candle, and read. Usually, however, it decides to downpour while I’m at work, and I find myself driving slowly in rush hour traffic during a storm.
What is Your Most Fond Autumn Memory?
When I was a kid, autumn was so much more fun. My parents carved pumpkins and decorated our house, I went with friends on “haunted hayrides” and trick-or-treating, and I got to start helping prepare the meals for Thanksgiving. As I get older, those carefree days turned into longer work weekends and stress searching for holiday gifts. However, my husband’s birthday is in late November, and spending his birthdays together are always cause for fond memories!
What is Your Favorite Autumn Scent?
It’s very cliché, but I love the scents of caramel and vanilla. It reminds me of something sweet baking in the oven.
What are You Most Excited About this Autumn?
I got to go to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party, which was exciting, and now I’m excited about Thanksgiving! I’m also looking forward to (hopefully) a few less hot, humid days, and seeing Coco in theaters.
What is Your Favorite Autumn Song?
“I Put a Spell on You” from Hocus Pocus always gets me in the fall mood!
What is Your Favorite Autumn Movie?
Harry Potter, Hocus Pocus, and Nightmare Before Christmas (even though I guess that’s technically a Christmas movie? Oh, well).
What TV Show are You Most Looking Forward to This Autumn?
It’s been airing for a few months now, but I’d have to say Once Upon a Time Season 7. It’s a little weird, now that they rebooted the entire show and replaced a lot of characters, but I still watch it every week.
What is Your Favorite Autumn Color?
There is a lovely chocolate brown colored sweatshirt I own (and can finally wear outside without completely melting), so I’ll go with that!
What is Your Most Loved Outdoor Autumn Activity?
There aren’t a lot of opportunities for autumn activities here in South Florida, but I like being outdoors in the sun when it’s not so humid. The husband and I went kayaking the other weekend, and being out on the water without sweat dripping down our backs was lovely.
What is Your Favorite Autumn Fashion Trend?
I don’t know that much about fashion, to be honest, but I love seeing everyone carrying delicious looking Starbucks coffee cups in their hands. I may be basic, but a Starbucks coffee cup filled with delectable concoctions (Caramel Brulee Latte, anyone?) always make a great accessory.
If You Could Have a Familiar/Spirit Animal, What Would It Be?
I’m an Aquarius, and I feel very connected to the water (especially since I grew up ten minutes from the ocean). I love all sea creatures, specifically dolphins. However, when I was little I saw a sculpture at Disney that had Ariel, my favorite Disney character and namesake, swimming with a manatee. Watching manatees at aquariums always make me feel so peaceful, and they’re so quiet and just keep to themselves. So, I guess manatees would be my spirit animal!
Name One Place You Wish You Could Visit During Autumn?
Salem, Massachusetts, or anywhere in New England- someplace where they know how to do autumn the right way! I’d love to visit the U.K. during autumn as well- anywhere I can see seasons, and pretty leaves, and pumpkins everywhere!
What is Your Favorite Photo You Took Last Autumn?
I love this one I took at the Hamilton Pools Preserve in Dripping Springs, Texas last fall! It was such a beautiful day.
What Are You Being This Halloween?
This is clearly an old question, but I don’t think I’ll ever truly dress up for Halloween until I have kids- I love watching others dress up, and seeing how creative others get with costumes! It’s funny- I’m someone who loves fairytales and escaping reality, but I have a hard time coming up with costumes to wear for Halloween.
That’s it! I’m not going to tag anyone specifically, but if you’d like to answer these questions, please do! This was a fun tag to get me in the autumn spirit, and soon enough, it will be the holidays!
