I made a choice that when 2018 started, I would have no “bad days.” Sure, everyone has bad days, but you can make the choice to find the good in even the dreariest, most terrible day. Now, when I come home after work and get asked how my day was, I always say it was a good day. Even if it was mediocre, tiring, and/or full of anxiety, something good always happened- even if the only thing that made me smile was listening to my favorite song on the way to work.
Of course, I’m only human, so I did do some complaining. January at my job means the start of high season, where everyone is busy and slightly harassed. The snowbirds are out in full force, clogging up the roads, shops, and restaurants. I am set to move in a few days and still have lots to pack. And in the past week, my state has experienced record-breaking cold temperatures. I don’t think I’ve been properly warm since December.
Therefore, for this post I decided to focus on the positives. In 2018, I’ve discovered a lot of new things that make me happy- and it isn’t even mid-January yet! I know I have a lot to look forward to, but here is what’s making me happy so far:
Binge-Worthy TV Shows
Two TV shows I started watching in 2018 are The Good Place and Black Mirror (Season 4). I’ve watched every single Black Mirror episode, and have been waiting anxiously for season 4 to premiere, which it did (on Netflix) on December 29th. It took only a few days to finish watching, but my head is still reeling from both horror and fascination. The Good Place was a show I had wanted to watch for a while, after seeing mentions of it on Tumblr. I finally finished season 1 (also within a few days), and now I can’t wait for season 2!
Some other shows I am anxiously awaiting in 2018 are Supergirl (Season 3) and The OA (Season 2). The former seasons can be found on Netflix. I am also awaiting the return of Once Upon a Time in March, but not as anxiously. My love for that show has dwindled slightly ever since the season 7 “reboot.”
The Greatest Showman (Film and Soundtrack)
This was a completely unexpected bright spot in my start to 2018. I knew I would enjoy the film, but I had no idea just how magical it would be. It’s all about inclusion, and following your dreams, and not worrying whether others think you’re crazy for daring to live a little differently. Aside from the great message, the visuals and music are simply stunning. I’ve had the soundtrack on repeat ever since I saw the movie, and I’m so glad I decided to watch this film on New Year’s Eve. What a great start to 2018!
Booking Our First Europe Hotel
In May, Eric and I our going on our first overseas vacation! We’ll be visiting Paris, London, and Scotland. We’ll be hitting up all the tourist sites, Disneyland Paris, some quaint bookshops I’ve always wanted to visit (i.e., Shakespeare and Company), and of course, eat all the food! If any of my readers have tips to share, please comment! I’m open to anything. The hotel we booked in Paris is walking distance from the Louvre, and though the room seems a bit small, it still looks very lovely and cozy. I am tremendously excited for this trip!
Re-Reading Harry Potter
True, I’ve been re-reading the series since Thanksgiving, but now that it’s past the new year, I’ve finally reached the last two books of the series. These last two books are my favorite, and knowing they’re waiting for me when I get home after a long day of work is simply delightful. These books fill me with so much joy and comfort, and it doesn’t matter that I’ve read them a hundred times- re-reading Harry Potter is a great form of escapism and self-care.
Catching Up on Vlogs
During the holidays, I never really had a day to myself to watch all the Disney/Lifestyle/Travel vlogs I subscribe to, so it’s nice to experience some downtime now and watch all the new uploads I’ve missed! It truly is the little things that make you the happiest sometimes.
Packing Up Our Lives
While packing isn’t the most wonderful activity in the world (at times, it can be downright stressful), there’s a sense of satisfaction in throwing out old stuff and re-discovering old items of clothing, or books I had forgotten about. I love getting rid of clutter and feeling more organized. I can’t stop imagining how “grown-up” our new apartment is going to be, and I haven’t been able to stop perusing Pinterest for decorating ideas. It’s amazing how much stuff Eric and I have managed to accumulate within this tiny little apartment, but I enjoy going through everything, deciding what to keep, and getting my life in order.
Connecting with Book Bloggers
This year, as I begin the journey of publishing a new book, I’ve tried to think of how to further promote my previously published books. I discovered that there is a whole community of book bloggers out there who read and review books. I realized that sometimes, new authors will send these book bloggers free copies of their books in exchange for a review. I think this is a brilliant idea, and could contact a few fellow bloggers who have agreed to post a review of my book in exchange for a free copy. So far I’ve sent out three copies, and I can’t wait to keep connecting with bloggers! If you’d like to write a review of my book in exchange for a free copy, please comment or email me at email@example.com
2018 is sure to bring happier and more life-changing experiences- I am most excited for our move and our Europe trip! What cool things have you done so far, or are looking forward to, in 2018?
